In the quest to assemble your dream team, the importance of hiring exceptional talent cannot be overstated, especially when navigating through challenging times.

Traditional interview questions like "Why do you want to work here?" or "What is your greatest achievement?" offer limited insights.

However, in a recent article, three experts in decision-making highlight a game-changing perspective: the must have skill to evaluate in candidates, is critical thinking.

They assert that the most brilliant individual in the room isn't the one with all the answers but the one who asks the right questions.

We know that the most successful commercial leaders are those that ask the best questions to innovate new and better ways of achieving better results.

Drawing inspiration from the Socratic method, these authors propose a paradigm shift-let candidates interview you.

With this unconventional approach, interviewers present a business scenario and encourage candidates to steer the conversation through their questions.

For instance, consider a candidate interviewing for a position at Microsoft in 1998. When asked to "Sell me a toaster," the best candidates didn't dive into a sales pitch but instead they responded with thoughtful queries:

"How many people are in the family?"

"Are there young children in the house?"

"What is the age range of toaster users in the family?" These questions offer a glimpse into the candidate's critical thinking, decision-making, and leadership abilities.

As interviewers are we doing all the talking? or are we asking thoughtful questions that allow the candidate to ask questions which demonstrate their ability to think outside of square.

In essence, the goal is to inspire candidates to generate more questions than answers, showcasing their prowess in critical thinking.

This approach provides invaluable insights when you're on a mission to find ideal team members who can drive your organisation forward, without knocking over others in the process.

Some of the questions we will be discussing and providing answers to:

1. What is the impact of an applicants "lens" on team dymamics and role efficiency?

2. Is it worth having a lone high performer vs a team player?

3. Are cognitive assessments better than "street smarts"?

4. What is the best stage during the recruitment process to do a psychometric?

5. What questions can I ask to uncover critical thinking ability?

We will also answer some questions to support hiring managers.

Have you ever walked into a meeting room, or an office and you could feel the tension? No doubt you have. Does this inspire you to deliver at your best? While some would answer, it doesn't bother me. Many would answer, "No!" Does workplace conflict drain you or energise you? This question forces us to pause and reflect on our personality type and interpersonal skills. In the dynamic landscape of professional environments, conflict is inevitable. How well we navigate and resolve these conflicts can significantly impact our performance, personal lives, and career opportunities. Understanding the role of the different Personality types and how we are Driven can be a real game-changer. Some leaders thrive in confrontation, which supports their growth, while others prefer avoiding conflict altogether. We can resolve situations faster by recognising our hot buttons and other's while respecting these differences. Tips to Managing Conflict · Perspective Taking : Stepping into the shoes of others can help us understand their viewpoints. This empathy-driven approach allows us to see beyond our biases and preconceptions, fostering an environment of understanding and collaboration. · Attitude and Lens Shift : Shifting our mindset from "winning" to "problem-solving" can transform conflicts into opportunities for growth. Viewing conflict as an opportunity to learn and innovate rather than an obstacle. · Emotion Regulation : Emotions often run high during conflicts, clouding rational judgment. Practice emotional intelligence by acknowledging your emotions without letting them dictate your actions. Take a deep breath and give yourself some space where you are able to take a moment to respond thoughtfully. Mastering conflict resolution is not just about avoiding disputes; it's about harnessing the power of conflicts to fuel personal and professional growth. By understanding the sources of conflict , appreciating diverse personality types , and implementing strategies like perspective-taking , attitude shifting , and emotion regulation , we can transform conflicts into stepping-stones toward success.
